Ground and polished concrete is widely recognized as one of the most durable, eco-friendly, and easy-to-clean flooring options for both industrial and commercial spaces. However, achieving that pristine, mirror-like finish is a highly demanding process.
Before any polishing can occur, surface prep is mandatory. Grinding out concrete floor imperfections—such as high spots, trowel marks, or uneven joints—requires precision, patience, and, most importantly, the right diamond tooling. As a leading manufacturer in the diamond tool industry, Z-LION has helped countless contractors perfect their floor preparation. Here is our professional guide on how to grind out imperfections in a concrete floor efficiently.

Identify and Mark the Imperfections
The first step in floor preparation is finding the problem areas. Don't rely on the naked eye alone. Use a heavy-duty straightedge (at least 10 feet long) and lay it flat across the concrete floor.
Slide the straightedge across the surface and mark any places where it begins to teeter or where light passes underneath. Mark these visible high spots and uneven areas with a construction pencil or chalk. Identifying these zones ensures you focus your aggressive grinding exactly where it’s needed to level out the concrete floor.
Choose the Right Grinding Equipment
Not all concrete grinding jobs are created equal, and selecting the right machinery is critical for efficiency:
-
Walk-Behind Planetary Grinders: For large commercial spaces or extensive leveling jobs, a heavy-duty walk-behind grinder is essential. The weight of the machine provides the necessary downward pressure to cut through hard concrete.
-
Hand/Angle Grinders: For edges, tight corners, or small, isolated imperfections, a 5-inch or 7-inch hand grinder equipped with a high-quality diamond cup wheel is the most practical choice.
Select the Correct Diamond Tooling & Grit
The most common mistake contractors make when trying to fix imperfections is using the wrong grit. Moving up to a higher grit diamond polishing pad will not remove high spots—it will only polish the uneven surface.
To remove a significant amount of material, you must start with aggressive tooling:
-
For Heavy Coatings or Extreme High Spots: Start with PCD (Polycrystalline Diamond) tools. PCDs are designed to rip through thick epoxies and aggressively shave down concrete without loading up.
-
For General Leveling and Imperfections: Use a lower grit metal bond grinding disc (typically 16-grit or 30-grit). Metal bonds expose raw diamonds to aggressively cut the concrete and flatten the floor. Once the imperfections are removed, you can gradually progress to 50-grit and 100-grit metal bonds before transitioning to resin floor polishing pads for the final shine.
Let the Tool Do the Work (Don't Force It)
When leveling out a concrete floor, it is vital not to apply uneven or unnecessary pressure to the machine. Let the weight of the walk-behind grinder and the sharpness of the diamond tooling do the work.
Applying added pressure to a specific side, or rushing the machine across the floor, will only create deep scratches, gouges, or "divots" that you will have to spend hours fixing during the polishing phase. Maintain a steady, overlapping walking pace.
